about

Charlotte de Witte unveils a two-part homage to an iconic era of Belgium’s underground club scene with the debut of an archival label within her KNTXT imprint and a rework of one of the most anthemic techno tracks of all time. Appropriately titled Époque, this sonic time capsule aims to simultaneously preserve and reimagine the spirit, sounds and discotheque culture of the late 90’s and early 2000’s for a new generation. As head of the label, de Witte will kick off its release on January 25 with her own spin on the Belgian techno classic, “Universal Nation” by M.I.K.E Push.

Released in 1998 and originally written by M.I.K.E. Push as a B side for a different project, “Universal Nation” quickly solidified its reputation at the turn of the century as an iconic and defining track of this era in electronic music history. Reimagined through de Witte’s high-energy lens, this rework is an ode to one of her favorite classics.

“I'm unbelievably honored to have been able to rework one of the most iconic tracks ever made, once again,” says de Witte. “This one is straight out of Belgium and holds a lot of meaning for clubbers worldwide. Universal Nation has been with me since the very beginning, and I would like to thank Mike and Bonzai for allowing me to touch such a historic track. Coming from Belgium myself, this means a lot to me and my goal was to honor and respect the original while giving it a contemporary twist. It has brought me much joy to play it on stages around the world during these last few months, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.”

Best known for her “dark and stripped-back” brand of techno and crossover to other sounds of the underground, Charlotte de Witte pushes the boundaries of the genre that has a distinct and unforgettable sound that is uniquely her own. De Witte’s innovative ability allows her to seamlessly blend genres and styles that have won her a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim worldwide.

“Universal Nation (Charlotte de Witte Rework)” is the immediate follow up to a massive year for de Witte that saw several professional milestones for the titan of techno. In 2023, de Witte made history once again as the first woman and techno artist to headline Miami’s ULTRA Music Festival's Mainstage. She also closed out the Mainstage at Movement Festival, making de Witte the first woman to achieve this recognition in the festival’s 23-year history. Just as 2023 came to a close, de Witte secured her fourth consecutive title as the World’s Number 1 Techno DJ by DJ Mag. Alongside her impressive collection of industry accolades, de Witte showcased her extraordinary ability to push boundaries in 2023. This was evident through a dynamic campaign and tour for her “Overdrive” EP, which kicked off in NYC with a pop-up shop at Extra Butter, two sold-out nights at the Brooklyn Mirage and a guerrilla-style surprise performance that shut down Orchard Street for hundreds. Culminating the campaign to Los Angeles, she hosted her first all-night-long, sold-out solo show on the West Coast at the iconic Shrine Expo Hall. Wrapping up the year at Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), she celebrated her latest EP, “Power Of Thought,” with a 3-night KNTXT Turbo Club pop-up, featuring the Charlotada – a daytime hangout in collaboration with Tequila Don Julio.
